The existing roof had been reslated using mismatched Spanish slate, instead of the original Welsh slate, leaving the property looking patchy and poorly finished. The job began with a complete strip of all slate, felt, and batten. We inspected the roof’s structural joinery to ensure no hidden damage, then re-insulated the loft space with 300mm of loft roll insulation, greatly improving the property’s thermal performance.
Before changing from slate to concrete interlocking tiles, we consulted a structural engineer to ensure full compliance and safety. Following their recommendation, we doubled up the rafters throughout the roof to increase strength and eliminate the risk of timber sagging. This step was vital to ensuring long-term durability and structural integrity for the new roofing system.
High-Quality Materials, Expert Finish
Next, we installed a quality breathable felt and treated laths, fixed at a precise, calculated gauge. The valleys were replaced with new code 4, 15-inch lead, and we tiled the roof with stylish slate grey Marley Edgemere concrete tiles. For contrast and a classic finish, we fitted Old English Red Marley Modern concrete ridge tiles.
Our in-house lead specialist hand-welded a new lead gutter back on-site, showcasing the traditional skills that set us apart. We also installed fresh lead work to the chimney, grinding out the old mortar joints, repointing, and relaunching for a long-lasting, weatherproof seal.
The entire project – from the first strip to the final fix – was completed in just six consecutive days. Upon completion, the customer received a Building Control Certificate and a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, confirming all work met BS-5534 industry standards and had been carried out by competent, qualified professionals.
